Max Verstappen is definitely on Mercedes’ radar as a future asset, but he is not alone.
“Max is definitely a candidate, but I see a whole bunch of young drivers who could be driving a Mercedes in the near future,” said German team principal Toto Wolff in an interview with the Italian edition of Motorsport.com.
Verstappen has more or less linked his fate to Red Bull, but his long-term contract includes the clause that he may move to another team if Red Bull cannot supply him with a car to conquer the world title.
The Limburger seems to be able to compete more seriously than ever with the Mercedes this year, but for the time being, Lewis Hamilton has already trumped him in three of the four Grands Prix held so far.
Mercedes is looking at the future line-up because it is not sure whether seven-time world champion Hamilton and second driver Valtteri Bottas will still be there after this year. Both contracts expire after this year.
“You always have to plan for the future, even if we are loyal to our current drivers. Lewis is still essential to the success of our team. But we look at the youngsters who would also do well in a Mercedes, such as Esteban Ocon and George Russell,” said Wolff.
