UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund, is on standby in Syria to provide first aid to children and their families after the strong earthquake that hit Syria and Turkey the night from Sunday to Monday.

According to a provisional balance, some 600 people have already been killed in Syria, which is rising rapidly.

According to UNICEF, many buildings have collapsed, and many people are trapped under the rubble. “There are reports of entire families buried under the rubble of the buildings. Hospitals are overwhelmed with injured, and at least one hospital in northern Syria has been evacuated because the structure of the building has been compromised.

UNICEF emphasizes that the earthquake in Syria comes “at a time when thousands of children and their families are already extra vulnerable due to the harsh winter, the difficult economic conditions and all the war misery they have endured for the past eleven years.”
