The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has called on Israel not to annex occupied Palestinian territories.
“Annexation is illegal. Full stop,” said Michelle Bachelet in a statement. “Whether it be 30 percent of the West Bank or 5 percent.”
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Israeli government plans to annex parts of the West Bank. These may include settlements of Jewish settlers, but plans are yet to be worked out.
“It is impossible to predict the exact consequences of annexation,” said UN Commissioner Bachelet. “But they are likely to be disastrous for the Palestinians, for Israel itself and the entire region.”
Netanyahu and his coalition partner Benny Gantz have agreed that the annexation plan can be discussed within the government from 1 July.
However, according to an initiate, Gantz said that the date is “not sacred.” He would first like to tackle the economic consequences of the corona crisis.
Israel wants to implement the peace plan of the US government of Donald Trump with the Annexation.
It states that Israel may annex certain occupied territories. The Palestinians are firmly against the plan, which also provides for a Palestinian state.
