The U.S. military has confirmed that one of its jet fighters was involved in an incident involving an Iranian passenger plane.
Iranian media reported that the pilot had to take evasive action to avoid a collision with the American jet. According to the United States military, the jet remained at a safe distance.
The Mahan Air passenger plane was en route from Tehran to Beirut in Lebanon. It eventually landed safely at an airport there. The incident will be investigated, according to the Iranian Foreign Ministry.
All passengers left the plane, some with minor injuries, the Beirut airport chief told Reuters. They were injured following Iranian media injuries from the evasive manoeuvre. The aircraft returned to Tehran in the early hours of Friday, Fars news agency reported.
The United States military supervises its troops in the region. A spokesperson said the fighter jet was conducting a visual inspection of the Iranian plane when it passed a spot in Syria where U.S. troops are present.
Israel and the U.S. have for some time been accusing Mahan Air of transporting weapons to fighters in Syria associated with Tehran.
