The European Union is organizing an international summit on health in Italy next year. The fight against the coronavirus, which hit the host hard last spring, will be an essential topic.
The summit is one of the plans of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who announced her so-called State of the Union on Wednesday.
The committee also wants to strengthen the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), Von der Leyen said in her annual ‘speech from the throne’. They play an essential role in the fight against the pandemic.
There will also be an agency for biomedical research, following an American example. And the EU is stocking up on strategic goods such as masks and other protective equipment.
Next year, Italy will also chair the G20, the world’s top 20 economies.
