At least five people were killed and fourteen injured in Trier on Tuesday when the man tore through a pedestrian zone.
Police arrested the driver about four minutes after the emergency number was first called. One of the deceased victims is a baby.
The driver is from the area and is 51 years old. Justice does not rule out that psychiatric problems played a role.
The German was under the influence of alcohol. The authorities have no evidence yet that he had political or religious motives.
