The death toll from the coronavirus in India has passed 20,000. The country reported 467 new deaths on Tuesday, bringing the number to 20,160.
It also registered 22,252 new chains, bringing the total to 719,665.
The number of new infections and deaths has risen at the fastest rate in three months.
The authorities of the country’s 1.3 billion population introduced a strict lockdown in March but later relaxed it again to get the battered economy going again.
The official death rate per 10,000 people is still low at 0.15, compared to 3.97 in the United States and 6.65 in the United Kingdom, according to a Reuters news agency count.
Critics say that not enough tests are performed, so the number of infections is likely to be much higher.
On Monday, India overtook Russia as the third most affected country in the world, after the United States and Brazil.
