German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday expressed the hope that a deal can still be concluded on the EU recovery fund.

The marathon meeting of EU leaders in Brussels will start on a fourth day on Monday after a night of streaking did not lead to a breakthrough.

Merkel said on Monday that a step forward was taken last night. She hopes that is a sign that “an agreement can be made today or at least an agreement is possible”.

Her French colleague Macron also hoped that a compromise could be reached, but said she wanted to be “very careful”.
