The Kremlin has condemned US President Joe Biden’s “destabilising” comments about Ukraine. In a speech on Wednesday, Biden promised Moscow a “severe” response to a Russian military attack on Ukraine.
“The statements are repeated repeatedly and do not contribute to a reduction of current tensions. In addition, they may contribute to destabilising the situation,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov told reporters.
Mikhailo Podoljak, an adviser to President Vladimir Zelensky’s cabinet, said Ukraine welcomes Biden’s threat of a coordinated Western response should Russia invade Ukraine.
Biden, in the speech, foresaw a Russian invasion of Ukraine. He expects President Vladimir Putin to take that step, despite the major economic consequences of such an invasion for Russia.
