Israeli opposition leader Benny Gantz was elected Speaker of Parliament on Thursday. The former army chief was the only candidate and was supported by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party, among others.
Israeli media reports that the men are working on a broad coalition.
The opposition leader and Netanyahu could take turns to act as prime ministers, to the anger of some of Gantz’s allies. They certainly do not want to cooperate with Netanyahu, who is suspected of corruption.
A deal between Gantz and Netanyahu could be a breakthrough in the political crisis in Israel.
Despite three consecutive elections in a year, parties have been unable to get enough support to form a government.
