In southeastern Iran’s Sistan-Baluchistan province, four members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, Iran’s elite military corps, have been killed in a “terrorist” attack. That is what the Iranian news agency Irna said on Monday.

The province has been ravaged by violence for several months.

The attack occurred in the Saravan region, close to the border with Pakistan. It is one of the poorest regions in Iran and is home to the Baloch, a semi-nomadic people who mainly adhere to Sunnism, not Shia Islam, which is dominant in Iran.

According to Irna, four members of the Revolutionary Guard have “fallen like martyrs”. Due to the “strong presence” of the security forces, the attackers are now fleeing “towards Pakistan”, it sounds. Unfortunately, the press agency did not provide more information about who the attackers were exactly.

A protest movement has sprung up in Iran after the Kurdish-Iranian Mahsa Amini died in captivity on September 16. Three days earlier, the 22-year-old woman had been arrested by the Tehran vice squad for violating the Islamic republic’s strict dress code. Dozens of people have been killed in the brutal suppression of the protests.

In the capital of that province, Zahedan, the security services had already reacted with violence to the population’s protest at the end of September. That came after a police officer assaulted a minor. Dozens of protesters were killed.

As of December 14, Iran’s intelligence ministry reported the arrest of three individuals believed to be involved in the December 8 killing of a Sunni imam in the Sistan-Baluchistan province.
