In the DrĂ´me in France, five children were killed tonight in a traffic accident on the A7. Four other passengers who were also in the vehicle and belonging to the same family were injured.

According to local media, the accident occurred just after 7 p.m. on the highway between Valence and Lyon, near Albon.

The four injured are three adults and a teenager. All vehicle occupants would belong to the same family, according to BFMTV, a composite family living in Lyon.

The children killed had ages ranging from 3 to 14 years, according to Le Dauphine. It concerns three girls and two boys.

The family was likely on their way back from vacation when the vehicle hit the crash barrier, flipped over and caught fire on the hard shoulder, the region’s prefect said.

Le Dauphine reports that the car, a giant Renault, likely had a braking problem. The fire would have started while the vehicle was still moving. The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation.
