Eight people are still missing after the eruption of the volcano on the New Zealand island of White Island.

Of the 47 people who were on the island, five people died and 31 were hospitalised. The New Zealand police have announced this.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern told a press conference in Whakatane, a town close to the island, that many people in the hospital are in critical condition.

The eight missing were probably killed because according to the police, there is no longer a sign of life on the island. The police have conducted several reconnaissance flights above the island.

The wounded are tourists. They come from Australia, the United Kingdom, China, Malaysia and the United States.

The nationality of the dead has not yet been announced. According to The New Zealand Herald, one of the dead is probably a guide.
