An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 hit the northwest of the US state of California on Tuesday morning (local time). This is reported by the American geophysical institute USGS.

The relatively shallow quake occurred about 40 kilometres from the port city of Eureka. No tsunami warning has been issued.

According to a preliminary estimate by the USGS, the chance of death or injury is rather small. However, the earthquake may cause property damage. The website also reports power outages that the power grid affected. In Humboldt County, 60,000 families are without power.

Earthquakes regularly rock California. In 1994, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 killed 60 people. In 1989, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake killed 67 people.
