The Delta variant of the coronavirus now also prevails in Belgium. As a result, concerns about the mutant grow. It is more contagious than previous variants and is spreading throughout Europe.
The virus variant first appeared in India.
Delta then took hold in the United Kingdom, so much so that the government in London had to postpone major easing of corona measures. Portugal followed, and the variant is now also dominant in Germany.
That the new mutant would surpass other variants around this time is entirely in line with expectations, say experts in Belgian media.
“By the end of the month it is even possible that we will only see the Delta variant again,” says biostatistician Geert Molenberghs, who will be speaking in De Morgen.
