Bill Gates and his wife Melinda are donating $ 250 million, to fight the coronavirus. The money is intended for the development of cheap and easy-to-deliver vaccines and treatments.
“We have new drugs and more latent vaccines than we could have predicted at the start of the year, but these innovations can only save lives if they are spread around the world,” said Bill Gates. It is the Gates Foundation’s largest donation to date.
The wealthy philanthropist has already invested nearly 1.5 billion euros in the fight against the coronavirus through his foundation.
“Everyone gets better depends on the actions of world leaders and their dedication to delivering tests, treatments and vaccines to the persons who need them,” said Melinda Gates. Part of the donation will be used to deliver tests and vaccines to poorer countries in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.
Organizations in the so-called People’s Vaccine Alliance, including Oxfam Novib and Amnesty International, warned on Wednesday of a vaccine backlog in developing countries. Nine out of ten people in 69 poorer countries are at risk of missing out on a vaccine against the coronavirus next year.
Rich countries, on the other hand, are said to have reserved so many vaccines that they can vaccinate their population three times after approval.
