Bertens in First-round US Open against Qualifier. Kiki Bertens will compete against a player from the qualifying tournament in the first round of the US Open.
That has proved to be a draw.
In the event of a win, the seventh-placed Bertens will come across the winner of the match between Pauline Parmentier from France and the Russian Anastasia Pavlishkenkova.
Bertens, who can meet title defender Naomi Osaka from Japan in the quarterfinals,
stranded in the third round in New York last year.
The Czech Marketa Vondrousova then ruled her.
Richèl Hogenkamp can still qualify for the main tournament.
The Dutch is still one win away.
The first placed Osaka starts in New York with a match against the Russian Anna Blinkova.
Last year’s losing finalist, Serena Williams from the United States is linked to Maria Sharapova, also a Russian.
In the opening round, Robin Haase will compete against Argentinian Diego Schwartzman.
Haase never got further than the second round at the US Open.
Tallon Griekspoor is still active in the qualifying tournament.
Roger Federer is classified in the upper half of the schedule, just like the Serbian Novak Djokovic.
The two Wimbledon finalists can, therefore, meet each other in the semi-final battle.
Federer won the US Open five times, from 2004 up to and including 2008.
Triple champion Djokovic is the title defender.
Last year he was the Argentinian Juan Martin del Potro in the final battle.
