Confrontations between Kurds and ultra-nationalist Turks at demonstrations in Vienna put pressure on relations between Austria and Turkey.

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz on Tuesday accused Turkey of “sowing dissatisfaction.”

He said there should be an end to Turkish efforts to “influence the people here in Austria and also use them for his conflicts”.

In Turkey, reference is made to the deployment of the police in “using violence against young Turkish people”. Kurz strongly rejected that.

The riots threw fireworks and bottles, stones and iron rods flew through the air. “We don’t tolerate that,” said Kurz. “Those conflicts are being imported from Turkey.”

Turkey is currently engaged in an offensive against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party PKK in northern Iraq.
