US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Tuesday that he is concerned about the new charges against Russian opposition leader Alexej Navalny, who faces an additional 10-year prison sentence in a new case against him.

“Alexej Navalny and his associates are being targeted for their work denouncing official corruption,” Blinken tweeted. He called on the Russian authorities to release the opposition leader and end the persecution.

Navalny swore Tuesday on the first day of a new trial, which faces him with an additional ten years in prison that he would continue his fight against the Kremlin.

Last year, the anti-corruption foundation of President Vladimir Putin’s main critic was banned by Russian authorities. Multiple legal proceedings were initiated against its leaders.

Navalny’s incarceration is strongly frowned upon by Western countries, and this new trial threatens to reignite tensions. “My position on Navalny is very clear. His conviction is not in line with the principles of the rule of law,” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said during a visit to Moscow on Tuesday.
