An 8-year-old boy has shot and killed a 1-year-old girl in the US state of Florida with his father’s gun and injured a 2-year-old child.
The father had left his gun in a hotel room, where the boy found it, played with it and presumably accidentally fired a shot. That’s what Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons said Monday local time.
The shot hit the 1-year-old girl first, then the bullet wounded the 2-year-old child. The mother of the two girls was the girlfriend of the gun owner, a multiple convicted felon, Simmons said at a news conference.
After Sunday’s incident, the 45-year-old father returned to the hotel room in Pensacola and first hid the gun and drugs, according to investigators. The man is charged with possession of a weapon as a convicted felon, obstruction of the investigation, negligence and failure to safely store a weapon.
“We are dealing here with a 14-time convicted felon who, along with his girlfriend, has a gun at a local motel. He leaves the weapon behind, but doesn’t secure it properly, allowing his 8-year-old son to grab it and shoot with it. He kills a 1-year-old and injures a 2-year-old,” Simmons said.
The 2-year-old girl was not seriously injured. Her twin sister, who was also in the hotel room, was unharmed.
